Could 5 crowned teeth have developed problems within the last 6 months??
Added: May 13, 2009 - 4:02 PM
By: Patient Email Withheld, Lake Elsinore, CA
Need Dentist / Specialist: No
Provide Cost Estimate: No
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Crown
Teeth:
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: 5-13-09, today
Last Cleaning: 5-13-09, today
Case Description
5-13-09. New dentist said dark areas on x-rays indicate decay between crown and root on 5 teeth (one crown only 2 years old). Have 23 teeth, 19 with crowns. Said only 1 crown fits correctly (have had several dentists over the years). Had exam on 12-08 plus one new and one replacement crown. Regular dental check-ups and care for many years. Do 5 problems sound plausible, or is this a ploy for revenue? Live in So. Calif. where unemployment rate is almost 12%. New dentist's office days decreased from 5 to 3 about 1 year ago. I am a retired senior. Thank you for your anticipated help. Lynn S.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Dear Lynn,

Nothing is impossible but if you are not comfortable i would seek a second opinion. We do many second opinions for patients.

We do an exam and 4 x-rays at no cost to you and our doctor was voted best of San Diego 4 years in a row by his peers in San Diego Magazine. Our office # is 619-427-0810 if you would like any further info. Take care and have a great day.

The best way is for you to get a 2nd opinion. The second best way to figure that out is to look at the x-rays during the delivery of the crown. It could be an open margin (misfit), that has no decay. If it is an open margin, I''''ve seen some that have had that problem, but no decay for several years.

Dear Lynn,

I would agree with everyone else in saying that a second opinion is your best bet in finding out more information about your situation. I would be happy to help you with a free second opinion exam at our office. Contact us at 760.744.2168.

Hi Lynn,

Nothing is impossible, but like the other''''s said a second opinion is necessary. More than likely, these crowns have open margins, or are considered a misfit. I would have someone else take a look, and see which one they feel should be replaced, and which should be left alone.
