Case Description
I'm new to the area and recently went for a consult at a local dentist because I've needed my wisdom teeth out for a few years and in the last couple of weeks one tooth became infected and very swollen and painful. The dentist gave me an estimate of about $6000 total which included the extraction of 4 impacted wisdom teeth, routine cleaning, some special deeper cleaning, 3 fillings and surface treatment. She also tried to talk me into whitening on top of all this, as if 6000 isnt enough already. Is this as overpriced as I think it is? Also is there any reccomended supplemental dental insurance I can get to help pay for all this? I have Great West Healthcare which doesn't cover much. Thanks, Carrie

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Hi Carie...Thank you for your inquiry. First of all, you need to make sure whoever is extracting your wisdom teeth is a board certified oral surgeon. The rest of the treatment diagnosed for you (deep cleanings and fillings) should be rendered by a general dentist. The estimate definately sounds higher than normal to me. It depends on what kind of material the dentist will use on restoring your fillings. Porcelain inlays or onlays are much more expensive than a regular composite or plastic filling. Eitherway, I would recommend you get a second opinion. We would be happy to see you in our office. You can request a copy of your dental x-rays from your dentist and bring them with you at the time of appointment.Thank You,Yvette
